A conservator is generally needed:

• Because the person for whom the conservator is to be appointed has money, income or other assets, including property, which will be wasted or used up unless proper management is provided, he or she is unable to manage those assets, and funds are needed for the support of the protected person or persons legally entitled to receive support from the protected person.

A guardian is generally needed:

• Because the person for whom the guardian is to be appointed is physically or mentally unable to take care of all his or her own needs and requires someone to be legally authorized to act in his or her best interests.
