Judge Klein graduated as valedictorian of his Ohio high school class in 1970. He attended the University of California at Berkeley and graduated with honors from the School of Journalism in 1974. Judge Klein earned his law degree at Indiana University, Bloomington in 1977. Following law school, Judge Klein was in the private practice of law for 24 years, where he specialized in civil and commercial litigation and earned an "AV" Martindale-Hubbell superior rating.

Judge Klein has been active in the community and served on the Board of Directors at Temple Beth Israel, Scottsdale, including his last two years as president. Since becoming a judge in 2001, Judge Klein has been an Adjunct Professor of Law at the ASU College of Law and is the only judge currently on the Bench who has done all five Superior Court rotations.

Judge Klein has been on a probate assignment since June, 2011. He currently serves as the Probate/Mental Health Presiding Judge with supervisory responsibilities over other judicial officers.
