Glossary of Common Terms
Vacate To remove a hearing from the court's calendar.
Venue The county, city, judicial district or geographical area over which a certain court has power to
exercise jurisdiction.
Violation Hearing A hearing to determine whether a probationer has violated a written condition or
regulation of probation.
Visitation (Now referred to as Parenting Time or Access) The amount of time established by the court
that a child spends with a non-custodial parent or grandparent.
Voluntariness Hearing A hearing to determine whether or not a defendant's statements to a police
officer were made involuntarily.
Voir Dire The jury selection phase of a trial; a preliminary examination of a prospective juror by a
judge or lawyer to decide whether the prospect is qualified and suitable to serve on a jury.
