Community Supervision: ESP (Educational Success Program)
The
Educational Success Program provides direct services to youth and their families within the community.
The program’s design includes multiple steps, all geared towards meeting the goal of reducing truancy and
intervening with behavioral issues. Youth are referred to ESP either through a direct referral to the
program’s Family Resource Officer (FRO) or through the reports generated by the school and recorded on the
ESP database. Once a youth is referred to the FRO, the youth and, when appropriate, the family, receive an
individualized assessment to determine the most effective course of action.
The ESP has been successful in meeting its proposed goals. Of the 972 children sent the ESP 1st warning
letter, 182 continued to experience truant behavior which led to them receiving the phone call to discuss
the issues with parents (second warning). Of those 182, only 39 continued to have truant behavior which
led to actual citations for truancy. Many of the youth who were sent letters were seen by the FRO and
provided services to meet their needs. Each of the 39 students who were cited for truancy participated in a
CUTS hearing on the school campus with the parent and school personnel present. The hearing provided
consequences and services to assist families with issues that led to their on-going truant behavior.
