The Beat Within is a program that encourages detained juveniles to write about their life experiences so they
can influence other juveniles and improve their own reading and writing skills. Detainees write about their true
feelings about law, police, drugs, gang life, and many other problems facing our youth. Their essays and poems
are published once a month in the magazine The Beat Within. Juveniles from detention centers in California,
Virginia, New York, and Rhode Island contribute to this magazine.
