Judicial Biographies >Justices Of The Peace Justice of the Peace John R. Ore, University Lakes Precinct Justice of the Peace John R. Ore, University Lakes Precinct John R. Ore has served as Justice of the Peace for the University Lakes precinct since his election in the fall of 1998. Prior to this he served as the Justice of the Peace for the Tempe precinct from 1995 to 1998, when an additional precinct was added to create the current East and West Tempe precincts.

Since coming to the bench, Judge Ore has brought several new programs to the Tempe Justice Court including mediation, fax search warrants, and a victim’s impact panel. He also has expanded the Court’s Teen Court program to include a Teen Grand Jury. He was appointed by the Presiding Judge of Maricopa County Superior Court to serve as Interim Presiding Justice of the Peace in Maricopa County in 1999.

Before coming to the bench, Judge Ore served with the Tempe Police Department for more than 20 years. As a Captain, Major, and Commander, he commanded each of the Department’s four major divisions before retiring in 1994. He also served as a Basic Training Sergeant at the Phoenix Police Academy. He won the Tempe Police Meritorious Service Award in 1974, the Outstanding Young Law Enforcement Officer award from the Tempe Jaycees 1975, and the Outstanding Young Law Enforcement Officer award from the Arizona Jaycees 1975. He also won the Hon Kachina and the Rotary Service Above Self awards in 1998.

Judge Ore earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Arizona State University. He also is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy and the Northwestern University Traffic Institute course on Administration of Police Training.

He served in the United States Army as a military policeman in the XVIII Airborne Corps.
