Cognitive Intervention Program

Through the Cognitive Intervention Program, participants learn and practice the steps of Cognitive Self Change in a group setting. Participants look into their antisocial thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs as they relate to substance abuse and criminal activity. This process allows participants to take responsibility for their behaviors and to achieve and maintain long term behavior change. Each of these programs is funded through the Drug Treatment and Education Fund, and requires a fee of the probationer based on a sliding fee scale.

Maricopa County Adult Probation is currently targeting three particular populations with its cognitive programming:

  • We continue to serve individuals whose primary need is to address anti-social attitudes, thinking and beliefs through the Cognitive Intervention Program. This population receives a curriculum aimed at cognitive restructuring substance abuse and criminal behavior. Participants learn the parts of and how to use a thinking report. They learn how to process their thinking reports and evaluate their thinking objectively; and they learn how to evaluate their belief using the Franklin Reality Model. These groups meet one time per week for two and a half hours for 16 weeks and are available for medium or high risk offenders.
  • The cognitive restructuring curriculum is also being utilized with a population of youthful offenders, 25 years of age and under at our Mesa location. In addition to cognitive restructuring, this Intensive Outpatient Treatment Youthful Offender Program also addresses substance abuse, anger management, and problem solving. These groups meet two times per week for two and a half hours and continue for a period of six months. In addition to attendance in the group, participants are required to maintain employment, be involved in an educational pursuit, and participate in pro-social activities with their family in order to remain in the program.
  • Finally, we have implemented a cognitively based curriculum designed to address motivation. Motivational Enhancement is intended to address the needs of the substance abuser, who is not yet ready for treatment. These individuals typically present as defensive with low motivation. These groups meet twice per week for two hours for a maximum period of six weeks. Individuals may leave this pretreatment at any point in order to pursue the appropriate level of treatment.
Participants are expected to demonstrate knowledge of the steps of cognitive self-change while progressing in the program. These competencies are demonstrated through written assignments. The facilitator is responsible for providing the Probation Officer with attendance records as well as progress, termination or completion reports.

Referrals for all cognitive programming are processed through the Assessment and Referral Centers.
